Medicines Optimisation Centricity – addressing Access & Choice to Medicine Inequalities and Inequities

Petersfield, Hampshire, 01 October 2024, Aspire Pharma Ltd has initiated and funded a new report on improving access and choice to medicines by bringing the patient into the centre of the decision-making process; which follows the publication of a White Paper on medicines optimisation centricity, last year.

The report was published following a round-table event in Manchester, which brought together HCP’s including community pharmacy stakeholders to debate and discuss medicines inequalities, specifically considering how the current practice of medicines optimisation could be creating health inequalities and inequities. It focuses on analysing what can be done with and without funding to address inequalities, as well as looking at the potential building blocks for change.

The previous White Paper, which was also initiated and funded by Aspire and published in November 2023, calls for the right resources, tools, and knowledge to be put in place to help lift barriers to patient care. It highlighted a need for the NHS and pharmaceutical businesses to work collaboratively to ensure a patient centric approach is established, with a shared understanding of individual patients.

Richard Condon, CEO at Aspire said:

“At Aspire we want to improve patient access by bringing the patient into the centre of the decision-making process. The latest event and report has produced an understanding into the systemic challenges of the NHS, which enabled healthcare professionals to discuss and voice their concerns in an honest and open setting.

“The much-needed headspace that this work has created for key NHS decision makers, is enabling valuable discussions to take place, which touch on topics that others have not considered, or have been vocal about.

“Through our collaborative efforts we are helping to address health inequalities and creating a momentum for change, which will help deliver important improvements for patients and the NHS.”

At the Health Service Journal’s annual Medicines Health Forum, which will be attended by leaders from the Department for Health & Social Care (DHSC), NHS England and senior healthcare professionals a panel session will take place to debate is “Medicines Optimisation creating health inequalities?” A Thought Leadership article will be published in the HSJ which will follow this event.
